Broome high on Gamecocks
By Eric Guimaraes
OL Kaleb Broome (6-6 310) of Georgia Military JC says his goal is to play at USC. "My first goal is to win here at GMC but my next goal is to qualify and play for USC," said Broome. "I would choose Carolina over any school in the nation." Broome says he will visit USC on July 23 for the showcase camp but cannot participate. "I can't do anything because I'm in junior college," he said. "I'm just going to hang out." Broome has an offer from East Carolina and is hearing from Clemson, Syracuse, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee, Washington State, and Georgia. Broome says an offer from USC would mean a commitment for him. "I would commit immediately," said Broome. "I feel 85 percent about my chances (of gaining admittance to USC)." He says he really likes offensive line coach Shawn Elliott. "I love his attitude," he said. "He makes you want to work hard. When I visited, he had me wanting to go practice right then." Broome has one more season at Georgia Military.

Brent strong with USC
By Eric Guimaraes
WR KJ Brent (6-4 180) of Waxhaw, NC was the first commitment for USC's 2011 class. "It's a very strong verbal," said Brent. "I've planned all my visits to USC." Brent will be heading back to Columbia next week. "We're going down on Thursday to walk around campus and stuff because it's been a while since we've been there," he said. "On Friday, I'm going to the showcase camp." Brent has offers from USC, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke, NC State, East Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. He is also hearing from Stanford a lot. He says he will take an official to USC but has not decided on others. "That's something I'll think about during the season," he said. "Right now, I'm just focusing on USC."

Dixon taking recruiting slowly
By Phil Kornblut
DE Gerald Dixon (6-4 260) of South Pointe is doing very little with recruiting right now. Outside of visiting Clemson and Alabama earlier this summer, not much has changed with Dixon. He has not trimmed his list. He has no favorites. And has no other visits planned until he takes his official visits this fall. Dixon has offers from USC, Clemson, North Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State, Arkansas, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Auburn, Oregon, UCLA, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland and Kentucky. He said he and his brother, DL Gerald Dixon Jr. of Northwestern, do want to play together in college.

Clowney visits USC....Hart makes decision
By Phil Kornblut
DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6 240) of South Pointe made an unofficial visit to USC Saturday with his mother. They met with recruiter Ellis Johnson and fellow assistants Brad Lawing, Lorenzo Ward and Jay Graham. His mother also has visited North Carolina. USC is one of the top schools on Clowney's list along with Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Florida State and Miami. He's also visited Clemson, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina.

Byers to be at USC this weekend
By Eric Guimaraes
DL Roderick Byers (6-4 262) of Northwestern is heading to Columbia for the showcase camp at USC this weekend. "I haven't been able to go any camps this summer because of a small foot injury," said Byers, "but I'll be at USC on Friday." Byers says USC, Clemson, and Georgia Tech are his top three but two schools are showing more interest. "USC and Georgia Tech are recruiting me the hardest right now," he said. "Clemson is still in there though." Byers is heading to FSU in late August and says he plans to narrow his list at the beginning of the upcoming season. "I want to make a decision soon so I need to start cutting my list," said Byers. He has offers from USC, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, and Oregon but wants more. "I'm hoping that will change after we play on ESPN," he joked. His high school will face South Pointe on August 28 at 4:00 on ESPNU. He did not name a favorite.

Shell, Clowney now have two out front
By Phil Kornblut
OL Brandon Shell (6-8 295) of Goose Creek and DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6 240) of South Pointe identified their top two schools Sunday while attending the High School Sports Report Media Day at Wiliams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Shell said USC and Georgia are his top two seperating themselves from Clemson, Alabama and Miami whom he said also remain under consideration. "They are good schools and I really like them," he said of USC and Georgia. "I like the environment at both places." Shell said there's no leader between the Gamecocks and Bulldogs. Last month he visited Georgia with his mother and younger brother. He plans to be at USC Friday when the Gamecocks hold a camp but he will not participate. He says he'll announce a decision on Signing Day.
Clowney said USC and Alabama are now his top two ahead of Clemson, Florida State and LSU. Clowney had just visited USC unofficially Friday with his mother. He said his mother really enjoyed her first visit to the school. Clowney visited Alabama earlier in the summer. He will take his official visits before making a decision which he plans to announce at the Under Armour All American Game in January.

McKinney to attend USC camp Friday
By Phil Kornblut
OL Quincy McKinney (6-4 295) of Columbus, GA will attend USC's Showcase Camp Friday for what will be his first visit to the school. McKinney has not narrowed his list to a final group but is looking the hardest at USC, Southern Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Michigan State. "They are an up and coming school in the SEC," McKinney said of USC. "They have a legendary coach in Spurrier and it's the best conference in the nation." McKinney also has been to Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Florida State and Alabama for camps. He plans to narrow his list soon but is not sure when he'll make a final decision. "If something stands out to me really, really, really good, I'll commit," he said.

Leonard cuts it to three
By Phil Kornblut
6-5 Damien Leonard of JL Mann has cut his list to a final three his AAU coach revealed Tuesday. Leonard is down to USC, Arizona and Oklahoma State according to Willis Holiday. He has eliminated Clemson and Virginia Tech. "It has been a tough process over the last two months," Holiday said. "Damien wanted to see where the majority of recruits were coming in at and where coaches feel they are going to play him. We really like Arizona and Sean Miller and his staff are absolutely amazing. We love USC and Darrin Horn and his staff have been incredible. And then you have Oklahoma State and Travis Ford. The coaches there are very young and have a lot of energy. We just felt like this was the best for Damien at the time." Leonard will take official visits to his final three schools with his mother beginning in September and finishing up in early October. He will go first to Arizona followed by Oklahoma State and then USC. "A couple of days afterwards, we'll go over the process of elimination where Damien will feel what's the best fit for him and go ahead and name our school. Hopefully we'll be doing that just before the November 1st deadline." The entire interview with Holiday is available at SportsTalkSC.com.

Matulis says USC and FSU top two
By Eric Guimaraes
OL Mike Matulis (6-6 275) of Lake Worth, FL will be on USC's campus this weekend for the showcase camp and says the Gamecocks are in his top two. "I haven't narrowed my list or anything but FSU and South Carolina are definitely my two favorites," said Matulis. "When you're recruited by schools at that level, they all have great facilities and great coaches. I loved the weight room at South Carolina. That's for sure." Matulis is unsure of any other visits this summer due to a family situation. He has offers from USC, FSU, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Maryland, West Virginia, Louisville, South Florida, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Minnesota among many others. He did not name a favorite but says he plans to commit before the end of the summer.
