SEC ChampionshipIn bottom line terms, the only thing that matters in the SEC is who wins the SEC Championship.  The SEC title game is typically a stepping stone to the BCS National Championship.

When our children grow up, they will likely not know who won the game between Alabama and Florida in 2010 ... but rest assured, the info will readily be available for who won the SEC Championship that year.

In some circles, many people view the "old school" teams (Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee) as the plank holders to the SEC title.  In many cases, this is true.  Let's take a look at the numbers and see who the over all winners (and losers) are ...

Of course, when analyzing taking a look at anything that involves stats, we all want to know who is on top ... period.  Putting the conference into a table from top (most SEC Championships) to least (No SEC Championships) reveals that indeed, the Alabama Crimson Tide have won more (a lot more) titles than any other team in the conference:

In fact, the Crimson Tide has won one fewer Championship than the bottom EIGHT teams in the conference.  That is strong ... but who have been the premiere teams in the SEC since the SEC Championship Game was introduced in 1992?

While Alabama has shown that have won in every era, the recent memory champions of the SEC have overwhelmingly been the Florida Gators.  With seven of their eight total championships occurring since the SEC Championship Game was introduced ... followed by the four plank holders from the first table.

While we all know the conference is the strongest in the nation, it is also a very top heavy conference.

50% of the league has not won the SEC Title since 1992, and 25% have never won an SEC Title ... period.

Granted, two of the three teams that have never graced the stage the first Saturday in December were expansion teams (Arkansas and South Carolina).

So there you go, there are four historical title holders (Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and LSU), but the new money Florida Gators have owned the league winning 7 of the previous 17 Championships ... and I am quite sure the fans in Gainesville will be more than happy to tell you that "It is better to be new money, than no money".
